The influence of Comic Books in my song writing is EVERYWHERE.
I was introduced to comic books with a subscription to The Amazing Spider-Man in the 90s and never looked back! Though I didn’t start reading them religiously for a few more years, beginning with Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon, Joe Kelley’s run on Deadpool and the amazing Marvel Knights relaunch of Daredevil by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palimiotti. From then on I was rarely found without a comic book in my hand or near by as I slowly grew my monthly reading list to something like 200 hundred comic books a month! Getting a job in High School at "Planet Comics" in Smithhaven Mall on Long Island only amplified my reading habits, as I now had the discount I needed to buy old collections of comic books and educate myself further about the art of one of my favorite artistic mediums. In college, I began to put together pitches for the BIG TWO comic book companies, Marvel Comics and DC. Within 6 years I sold his first story, “DEADPOOL in FUN with Ninjas” published in Marvel Comics Presents #10 (Vol. 2) and was off to the races. Selling scripts for the Hulk, Batman and creating a character and series for DC Comics called “Dead Romeo”. Eventually, I shifted to kids books, writing the monthly ongoing adventures of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story and living my dream of writing for the Muppets with my “Muppet Snow White” mini series. In 2012, I switch gears again, going back to my horror roots with a six issue reinvention of “Evil Ernie” for Dynamite Entertainment. Over time, I grew tired of the grind of pitching stories to the big boys and decided to rededicate my comic book writing passion to only original creator owned projects. The first of which, a music/comic book anthology called “black light district: 6issues” will be release by Image Comics October 12th, 2016! And can be heard/read for free at www.blacklightdistrict.co/ Through it all, comic books have had a profound influence on my music, but not in the way you may think. Very few of my songs are directly inspired by comic books themselves, “Juggernaut” was NOT inspired by the X-men villain of the same name. “The Phoenix” was NOT inspired by the X-men heroine, Jean Grey. But BOTH of those songs and almost every other Jesse Blaze Snider song I have ever written shares the MORAL influence of comic books. Most comic books are about superheroes and most super hero comic books are about ideals. They’re about making the world a better place for everyone. This is the influence that has absorbed into my music. I am not a super hero, I am a musician, but I still wants to help people. Inspire people. Make them feel like they aren’t so alone. Inspired by the imaginary heroes and REAL LIFE IDEALS I learned from reading comic books, I create songs and perform them with a strong intention to help make the world a better place. Here is preview of my "Evil Ernie" comic book reboot set to some of my music....
