When I was a little kid my dad was gone all the time. As a baby I was raised with MTV on 24/7 to catch a glimpse of him on the TV screen. He was on the road touring with his band, Twisted Sister. I saw him for three months that first year and something similar the next. As I grew I did not understand why we couldn’t all go with him? I do now. But at the time, I swore I would never do this to my children. As I grew, I decided I would tour in my 20s and only then have children in my 30s. Didn’t exactly work out that way. When Logan Lane was born I was 26 and at that moment recommitted myself to never leaving her behind to go on the road. Four months later when it came time to perform a song at my daughter's Christening, I knew exactly what it would be about. Those of you who watched my family’s reality series, “Growing Up Twisted” know how that turned out. An acoustic version of the song was my first to chart on iTunes in both the US and Canada. Babies are lucky. Today, I’m preparing for the reality to come, me going on the road and leaving my four children behind like I always swore I would not. Unfortunately, I can’t uproot my kids from school, sports, friends and family every time I get an opportunity to go play some shows somewhere. I’ll have the chance to take them with me sometimes, sure. But largely, I can feel that history is about to repeat itself. But that’s okay, because “Go With Me” isn’t about physically bringing some one with you every where you go, it’s about bringing them with you in your heart and mind. Lucky for me the technology has increased to the point where I will be able to see my kids on tour whenever I feel like it! My father wasn’t so lucky as me. Anyway, people were really moved by the song when I released it as a single at the time, so we decided to launch a “Go With Me” contest, giving people a chance to have their loved ones featured in a music video with a full band version of the song. We had a thousand entries, but could only include a fraction. I’ll post the video below.
